One campus, one backbone.
The campus had grown building by building, each with its own ad-hoc link — radio shots, ageing copper and consumer-grade equipment. The brief was a single resilient fibre backbone reaching all 48 buildings, built to be expanded and maintained for decades.
As lead on the project I owned the route design, the civil works coordination, the splicing and termination programme, and the final commissioning of every drop.
From trench to termination.
- Route survey and duct design across the full campus
- Soil trenching, thrust boring and underpass crossings
- Hand-hole construction, ducting and cable pulling
- Splicing, termination, OTDR testing and core sharing setup
Built to be maintained.
Survey
Every building visited; routes chosen to avoid future construction zones.
Civil works
Trenching and boring supervised daily, with as-built records kept current.
Splice & test
Fusion splicing with OTDR traces filed per segment — no untested joints.
Commission
Each building lit, labelled and documented before sign-off.
What the campus gained.
All 48 buildings on a single managed backbone with documented routes, tested splices and spare capacity for growth — the foundation that later carried the 2 Gbps uplink upgrade and the secure examination network without new civil works.
Maintenance crews now trace any fault to a labelled segment in minutes instead of days.
